Blepharoplasty

Serving Virginia Beach & Chesapeake patients

“Look me in the eyes….”

From the time we are little, we are taught the importance of seeing “eye to eye” with each other. At North Beach Plastic Surgery, our board-certified plastic surgeons offer Blepharoplasty in Virginia Beach so your eyes can say what you want them to say. As we age, our upper eyelids lose their elasticity and our lower eyelids can sag, causing us to look tired, grumpy, or disinterested. Blepharoplasty (the medical name for an eyelid surgery) can help change that. Read on to learn more about how North Beach Plastic Surgery can revitalize your eyes with a blepharoplasty.

What is Blepharoplasty?

Blepharoplasty (or an eyelid lift) is a surgical procedure that improves the look of your eyelids. You can have upper eyelid surgery, lower eyelid surgery, or both. Let’s examine the difference a little closer.

Upper Eyelid Surgery:

Drooping and tired-looking upper eyelids can send the wrong impression. With upper eyelid surgery, our surgeons can remove excess skin and fat and reposition muscle to restore a more youthful appearance, while taking care to make the incisions invisible.

Lower Eyelid Surgery:

If you have “bags” under your eyes, lower eyelid surgery can help by removing the fatty deposits that cause them. Lower eyelid surgery also tightens the skin, eliminating droopy lower eyelids. The incisions for this procedure can often go on the inside of the eyelid to avoid visible scarring.

What are the benefits of Eyelid Surgery?

If you suffer from skin laxity (loose or sagging skin) around the eyes, you will see folds or crinkles in the natural curvature of your eyelid, which can impact vision in some cases. Tightening the eyelid restores the natural contour of the eyelid. Blepharoplasty can also remove fat deposits that show up as puffiness or bags under the eyes. Other benefits to lower eyelid lifts include a more natural curve and a restored lower eyelid that does not droop. An easy way to tell if you have a drooping lower eyelid is to relax your face when you look in the mirror. If you see noticeable white below the iris and wrinkles in your lower eyelid, you could benefit from lower blepharoplasty.

Am I a good candidate for Eyelid Surgery?

Good candidates for Blepharoplasty include healthy adult non-smokers without serious eye conditions or other medical issues that could negatively impact their ability to heal. It’s also important to have a clear understanding of what you hope to accomplish through eyelid surgery. When you visit North Beach Plastic Surgery, our board-certified plastic surgeons will look at your eyes and your medical history and make sure you are a good candidate for blepharoplasty.

Your Eyelid Surgery Procedure

Depending on your procedure, you will either receive intravenous sedation or general anesthesia. Once you are comfortably sedated, your surgeon will begin the procedure. For upper eyelid surgery, your surgeon will make a careful incision along the crease of the upper eyelid, making it nearly impossible to see any visible scars after recovery. Your surgeon will remove excess skin and reposition muscle to recreate a natural curvature of the upper eyelid. Following this step, your surgeon will close the incision. For lower eyelid surgery, your surgeon will enter the lower eyelid at the point you agreed in your plan. Your surgeon will carefully reposition the eyelid tissues and remove fatty deposits causing bags or swelling beneath the eyes then close the incisions.

Blepharoplasty Recovery

Following your surgery, you will need to have someone drive you home, as you will still be groggy. During your initial recovery, you may experience swelling, bruising, irritation, and some discomfort. It is very important to protect your eyes and not rub them after surgery, no matter the temptation.

North Beach Plastic Surgery provides you with detailed recovery information to minimize your risk of post-surgery side effects and get the best results from your procedure. We’ll also provide you with ointments, compresses, and medication so you can take care of yourself during your recovery. You can expect to be able to return to public life within 14 days of surgery, though complete recovery may take a few more months.

Blepharoplasty Results

As your swelling goes down and healing continues, you will begin to notice the effects of your surgery. Your eyelids will look cleaner and more focused. Your appearance will seem more alert and vibrant, without looking surprised or “deer in the headlights.” Any annoying skin blocking your vision will be gone. These may seem like small changes, but because the eyes are such a focal point of the face, blepharoplasty can have a big impact on how others perceive you. While your body will continue to age normally, the results will be a permanent reduction in the visible age of your eyes.

Eyelid SurgeryFrequently Asked Questions

Like all surgery, Blepharoplasty involves risk, including infection, bruising, swelling, and impaired vision. During your consultation, your surgeon will go over all the potential risks of eyelid surgery and provide detailed instructions on ways to minimize them before, during, and after your procedure.

Eyelid surgery is an elective procedure and insurance will not cover it.

Eyelid surgery (Blepharoplasty) deals specifically with skin laxity in the upper and lower eyelids. Eyebrow surgery (also known as a brow lift) involves raising the eyebrows to reduce wrinkles and restore the brow to a higher, more youthful position. Because the skin on your face is all connected, eyebrow surgery could impact your eyelids as well, but not to the degree that eyelid surgery does. Patients sometimes choose to have both eyelid and eyebrow surgery done together to receive the positive effects of both procedures.
